Convex printing is one of the oldest printing techniques in the world, mainly for the graphic and textual parts on the printing plate, that is, the parts that need to be printed on the paper are raised, while the non graphic and textual parts are concave, and the non graphic and textual parts are blank.
When printing, ink is applied to the raised areas and then directly transferred to the substrate through pressure. You can imagine it as a complex seal or rubber stamp, and its working principle is exactly the same as this. Firstly, printing plates can be made, and the protruding graphic and textual parts can be created through carving, chemical etching, or modern photopolymerization techniques. Secondly, the ink is evenly applied to the surface of the printing plate through the ink roller. As only the protruding parts come into contact with the ink roller, the ink only adheres to the graphic and textual parts.
Then cover the printing plate with paper or other substrates and apply pressure. Under the pressure, the ink on the raised part of the printing plate will be transferred to the paper, forming an imprint. After the transferred ink dries, the printed product is completed. Traditional movable type printing was invented by the ancient Chinese inventor Bi Sheng and later systematized by Gutenberg in the West as a classic form. It is the use of reverse, raised metal or wooden movable type for typesetting, combined into the required manuscript, which was the most important method of book printing from the 15th to the mid-20th century.
Flexographic printing is the mainstream form of modern relief printing, which can be understood as a high-tech rubber stamp. The printing plate is a soft and elastic photosensitive resin plate that can use water-based or UV ink. The range of printing materials is very wide, not limited to paper, but also including plastic film, corrugated cardboard, and metal foil. The oldest form of relief printing originated in the Tang Dynasty of China, where craftsmen reverse carved images and text onto a complete wooden board to create a complete printing plate. Due to direct embossing, letterpress printing will leave slight indentations on the surface of the paper, known as pressure marks.
