As one of the most important consumables for digital printing, paper requires a smooth and delicate surface structure, reasonable and controllable ink adhesion, vivid graphic and textual presentation effects, highly controllable paper shape stability, and continuous printing performance. Digital printing equipment is generally divided into electrostatic toner digital printing machines and inkjet digital printing machines. Every practitioner in the printing industry should choose paper reasonably according to the different models. So, what requirements should digital printing paper meet? How should I choose?
Performance requirements for paper in digital printing
There is currently no unified standard for the performance requirements of digital printing on paper, nor are there standardized testing methods and instruments. However, some large digital printing equipment manufacturers abroad (such as HP, Canon, Epson, etc.) have their own set of testing methods to strictly control the quality of digital printing paper, while research in this area is scarce in China. As a specialized paper, digital printing paper must have the following performance requirements:
(1) The ink is not completely absorbed by the paper and there is no smudging. The ink absorption speed and drying speed should be fast, the ink fixation effect should be good, and the lateral diffusion and longitudinal penetration of ink droplets should be appropriate.
(2) The ink dots on the paper must have high contrast and bright color tones.
(3) Ink dots are appropriately presented on the surface of paper, and are close to circular with high edge clarity.
(4) The image resolution of printing is high, and the ink dots on inkjet paper are complete and non diffusing. The printed image has high color density, continuous tone, bright and full colors, sufficient layers, and good reproducibility.
(5) Colors have a certain degree of fastness. The image and text should have water resistance, light resistance, and indoor preservation properties, and should not change color or peel off for a period of time.
(6) The paper has good conveying performance, good hand feel, friction resistance, and does not shed powder.

Appropriate electrical performance
Digital printing machines, copiers, or desktop printing machines that utilize the principle of electrostatic printing are a printing method that uses the electrostatic attraction of positive and negative charges to transfer ink powder. Therefore, it is required that the electrical properties of the paper, such as resistivity and dielectric constant, be controlled at an appropriate level. However, paper with good conductivity, such as aluminum foil backing paper, may even produce arc phenomena (non-conductive parts or accidental charging of air), leading to machine damage and poor printing quality.
Uniformity and surface smoothness
The use of electrostatic printing requires that the distribution of fibers or fillers in the printing paper must be uniform, and the smoothness of the paper surface is also crucial for the transfer of pigments. After the pigment reaches the paper surface, it is mostly fixed by hot pressing. Therefore, the smoothness, surface chemical properties, and heat treatment performance of the paper surface must also be controlled at an appropriate level. In addition, paper containing wax, stearic acid salts, and plasticizers can cause stains on digital printing machine photoreceptors, leading to problems.
Temperature and humidity of paper
The changes in moisture content caused by environmental temperature and humidity during transportation, handling, and storage of printing paper will have an impact on the digital printing quality of electrostatic printing principles. Therefore, relevant warehouses, printing workshops, etc. should control the temperature and humidity of the paper. Digital printing systems often use paper with a relative humidity of 30% or operate in air-conditioned environments.
