Understanding the Difference between Coil and Comb Binding

Both comb binding and coil binding are extremely preferred binding techniques performed using comb binding and coil binding machines respectively. Both these methods are extremely effective, and the finished product often looks similar. However, it is important to remember that coil and comb binding are two different binding methodologies that differ in many different ways.

Both these binding methods bind a specific material without the use of glue. Documents created by coil and comb binding are more flexible compared to glued documents and it is possible to fold them at multiple angles. Most importantly, we can disassemble the bound documents without damaging the paper. The binding material can be metal as well as plastic, and there are a variety of colours to choose from. Having said that, there are serious differences between these two methods in terms of their binding techniques and how the respective machines function.

Coil binding:

Also known as spiral binding, coil binding uses continuous coils to bind a document by connecting a series of holes.

The binding machine used for this type of binding can be electrically operated.
The bound plastic collar is continuous and spiral.
In order to prevent the sliding of the pages, the end of the rubber ring must be fixed.
It is possible to fold back the bound documents by 360 degrees.
Mostly used for binding 100 or more pages.
The document can be disassembled by turning the coil manually.
The most important advantage of this binding method is its higher flexibility.  An electric coil binding machine is capable of binding more pages in relatively less time.

Comb binding:

As the name suggests, comb binding binds documents using comb-like binding materials. The binding material used here is a combination of a series of small circles. Comb binding machines can open these circles and bind by inserting them into the holes on the paper. This method is extremely popular nowadays, and is used extensively in office environments.

The binding machine can be used to disassemble and reuse the bound materials. The documents created by comb binding can be laid flat, but can’t be folded by 360 degrees.

Though different types of comb binding machines are available, their binding operation is almost the same. While punching holes in the paper, the handle of the machine binds the documents. These binding machines come with single or double handle, the double handle variant being more stable in terms of operation.

 Some Major Differences:

Comb binding allows us to open the booklet easily and add or remove pages without causing any damage to the binding. With coil binding, however, this process is not that simple. In order to replace pages, you will have to cut and destroy the coil.
Compared to comb binding, coil binding is much more durable. In coil binding, the edge of the book goes through minimum wear and tear because it doesn’t have any moving parts from which the binding can be opened.
Finally, there is also a price difference between coil and comb binding. In general, comb binding is a more economical option compared to coil binding.
