Burning for six days, Europe‘s largest paper mill‘s $1 billion investment goes up in flames!

The serious fire that occurred in Kipas Kagit, the largest paper mill in Turkey and even in Europe, was finally extinguished after six days of continuous fighting.

The fire caused serious damage , there are media reports, the fire over an area of 240 hectares, resulting in 140,000 tons of finished paper into ashes and 85,000 tons of waste paper was burned, from the picture and video analysis, burning as long as it is happening in the company‘s waste paper yard. At present the company has stopped production. Fortunately, the fire did not cause any deaths, only four people were slightly injured. The fire also did not spread to the production and machinery departments.

Nearly 400 firefighting teams from nine Turkish provinces were involved in the firefighting efforts after the fire broke out, and air support was provided by firefighting helicopters and airplanes from the Ministry of Forestry and Gendarmerie. After the fire was extinguished, there was a large ash rain around the factory. The cause of the fire is under further investigation.

Preliminary analysis indicates that the fire started at 5:00 p.m. local time on Friday, July 12, and began in the storage area of the waste paper processing plant in the Sok industrial area and spread to the finished product warehouse. The mill, which continues to cool down, has formed a mountain of ash in the aftermath of the fire.

Kipas Paper was founded in 2011 to produce high-grade containerboard from waste pulp. Currently, the company has three paper machines: machine 1 in Kahramanmaraş province, which produces 450,000 tons per year; machine 2 in Söke city, which produces 720,000 tons of coated paper; and machine 3, which produces 650,000 tons per year of corrugated, imitation kraft, and white-faced kraft paper. The plant has an investment of US$1 billion and generates US$200 million in exports annually.

Some consultants analyzed that the fire may lead to a short-term shortage of containerboard in Turkey and Europe, and lead to increased demand.

Measures to protect the Turkish market from imports were approved by a Turkish presidential decree at the end of June 2024 and apply to imports and testliner of corrugated board made from rice straw (HS code: 4805.12.00) and recycled grade boxboard (corrugated board), with HS codes 4805.19.10, 4805.19.90, 4805.24.00 4805.25.00. Starting from the end of July 2024 (30 days after the publication of the regulation in the Official Gazette), an import duty of $87/tonne will be levied on all goods that comply with these regulations.
